The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) released its annual “2023 Global Liveability Index”, and the Austrian capital Vienna topped the list for a second time, while Japan’s Osaka was the only Asian city in the top 10.

According to CNN, the Economist Intelligence Unit rated 173 cities around the world based on a number of important factors, including health care, education, stability, infrastructure measures and conditions.

Vienna was recognized for its impeccable basic practices, unblemishing of civilization and entertainment, as well as its impeccable teaching and conditioning, and was ranked number one again in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Livability Index.

Copenhagen, Denmark, ranked second. Although Australia’s Melbourne and Sydney have fallen in the rankings in recent years, with Sydney falling out of the top 10 in recent years and Melbourne sharing 10th place with Japan’s Osaka in 2022, both cities have fallen this year to rank third and fourth, respectively.

Canada fared poorly this year, with three cities joining the top 10: Calgary, Vancouver and Toronto.

Switzerland, meanwhile, has two cities in the top 10, with Zurich at number six and Geneva tied with Calgary at number seven.

Due to the removal of restrictions related to COVID-19 (2019 coronavirus disease), Osaka’s civilization and situation score improved slightly to 10th place.

The World’s Top 10 most livable cities in 2023 are as follows:

  1. Vienna, Austria
  2. Copenhagen, Denmark
  3. Melbourne, Australia
  4. Sydney, Australia
  5. Vancouver, Canada
  6. Zurich, Switzerland
  7. Canada – Calgary, Switzerland – Geneva
  8. Toronto, Canada
  9. Osaka, Japan, Auckland, New Zealand
